Watch the full length film here:

Last week saw the launch of my biggest project to date, a feature length film of While She Sleeps’ spring European tour [read blog post about it]. It’s our own interpretation of the movie ‘500 Days of Summer’. Although without the heartache – though lots of highs and lows!

Here’s a mock DVD cover I designed for it.

All the footage was shot over 3 weeks touring in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia. On this tour I was the tour manager and also driving most of our journeys, so I’d encourage the band to shoot whenever possible too. Everything was shot on my Canon 7D, with either a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 or a Nikon 50mm f2, and all of the audio through a Rode Stereo VideoMic. The project was edited in Adobe Premiere CS5, and the titles created by scanning and tracing an illustration, then animated in After Effects.

Project organisation was a huge part of production, with over 200gb of footage, countless hours. As well as processing all the footage, planning the order of the film was crucial to reflect the ‘500 Days of Summer’ vibe, as well as the backing music and how this matched emotions.

I’m running a 4 year old iMac with not enough RAM or hard-drive space to realistically cope with such a size project, so loading/rendering/exporting times were pretty bad. This will probably be the last big project this machine encounters I think.

I’d like to thank everyone for their kinds words about the film, the reaction so far has been far greater than I ever would’ve hoped.

I’m available for tour video projects in the coming months so if you’d like to talk about working together, please get in touch via tom@getdeluxe.org
